Advice from an Old Man

Do not turn Psalm 91 into a promise that nothing bad will ever happen to you. I have lived long enough to know better than that. Trust God, obey Him, use the good sense He gave you, and do not test Him just to prove you have faith. ______________________________________________________________

“One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)

Psalm 91 is one of the most comforting chapters in the Bible, but it is also easy to misuse.

Some people read it as if God is promising that believers will never get sick, never be injured, never face danger, and never die. That cannot be what it means, because faithful believers throughout Scripture suffered, were persecuted, and died.

Psalm 91 is about trusting God, not becoming untouchable.

“For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways.”(Psalm 91:11)

Even Satan quoted that verse to Jesus. He tried to get Jesus to jump from the temple and force God to protect Him. Jesus answered, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” (Matthew 4:7)

That tells us something important. Trusting God does not mean doing something foolish and expecting Him to rescue us.

Psalm 91 promises that God is our refuge. He is with His people in danger. He hears them when they call. He gives real security that goes deeper than physical safety.

“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble.” (Psalm 91:15)

Notice that verse carefully.

God did not say there would be no trouble.

He said, “I will be with him in trouble.”

That is the promise.

Faith is not believing nothing bad can happen to you. Faith is knowing that whatever happens, you belong to God and He will not abandon you.
