Advice from an Old Man
You are going to walk through some valleys in life. Don’t waste them blaming God or feeling sorry for yourself. Stay close to the Shepherd, listen to His voice, and keep walking. The valley is not your home. God is leading you through it. ______________________________________________________________
“He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.” (Psalm 23:3–5)
Psalm 23:4 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, but sometimes we turn it into something soft and comforting while missing what David actually said.
David did not say God would keep him out of the valley.
He said God would be with him while he walked through it.
That matters.
Following Christ does not mean your life will always be easy. You may lose people. You may get hurt. You may be betrayed. You may struggle with fear, loneliness, disappointment, or questions you cannot answer. Christianity is not God promising you a pain-free life.
Jesus never promised that.
“In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Psalm 23:4 also does not say David pretended evil was not real. He said, “I fear no evil.” There is a difference. Evil exists. Trouble exists. Death exists. But David knew something bigger than the danger around him.
God was with him.
And notice what comes before verse 4. God guides him “in the paths of righteousness.” You cannot live however you want, ignore God, chase sin, and then use Psalm 23 like a spiritual security blanket. The Shepherd leads. The sheep follow.
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
Then look at what comes after the valley. David says God prepares a table for him “in the presence of my enemies.” God does not always remove the enemy. Sometimes He shows His faithfulness while the enemy is still standing there.
That is real faith.
Faith is not saying, “Nothing bad will happen to me.”
Faith is saying, “Whatever happens, I will not walk through it alone.”
Advice from an old man: Stop waiting for life to become easy before you trust God. It may never become easy. Follow the Shepherd now. Stay close to Him now. Obey Him now.
The valley is real.
But so is the Shepherd.
