Advice from an Old Man
If a church hurt you, I am not going to tell you to “just get over it.” Some church people have done real damage. But do not let the failure of people become your reason for walking away from Christ. ______________________________________________________________
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.” (Matthew 23:25)
Church hurt is real.
Sometimes the people who talk the most about love, truth, grace, and holiness are the same people who gossip, control, lie, cover up sin, or protect leaders who should be confronted. Jesus had no patience for that kind of hypocrisy, and neither should we pretend it does not matter.
But here is where you need to be careful.
Do not confuse Jesus with the people who misrepresented Him.
A pastor can fail you. A church can fail you. Christians can act nothing like Christ. None of that changes who Jesus is.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
Forgiveness also does not mean pretending nothing happened. You can forgive someone and still set boundaries. You can forgive and still tell the truth. You can forgive and still leave a church that refuses to deal with serious sin.
What you should not do is let somebody else’s hypocrisy become your excuse to walk away from God.
That only gives the people who hurt you even more power over your life.
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith.” (Hebrews 12:2)
If church people have hurt you, deal honestly with the hurt. Pray. Get wise counsel. Look for a church that actually teaches Scripture and lives what it teaches.
Do not look for perfect people. You will not find them.
Look for truth, humility, repentance, and people who are serious about following Christ.
