People toss around the phrase “the man upstairs” like God is some neighbor living above the ceiling. It is usually meant to sound harmless, maybe even friendly. But it shows how small our view of God can become.

God is not a man.

“God is not a man, that He would lie, nor a son of man, that He would change His mind.” (Numbers 23:19)

God is not flawed, forgetful, or trying to figure things out as He goes. He does not lie. He does not make mistakes. He is the Creator of heaven and earth, the One who has always been and always will be.

And God is not “upstairs.”

“Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:24)

God is everywhere. He cannot be boxed in, put somewhere above the clouds, and called on when we need a little help. Scripture says, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is the footstool for My feet.” (Isaiah 66:1)

That is the God we are talking about.

Calling Him “the man upstairs” brings the Almighty God down to our level. It makes Him sound like one of us, only a little wiser and more powerful. But God is holy, righteous, eternal, and worthy of reverence.

That matters because how we think about God affects how we live before Him.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10)

When people lose their fear of God, they begin treating Him casually. Prayer becomes casual. Worship becomes casual. Sin becomes easier to excuse because God no longer seems very holy.

His name is not something to throw around carelessly.

Scripture says that at the name of Jesus, “every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Philippians 2:10)

Every knee.

That does not sound like “the man upstairs.”

It sounds like the King of kings and Lord of lords.

There is nothing wrong with knowing God personally. Through Christ, believers can call Him Father. But being close to God should never cause us to forget who He is.

How we speak about God reveals something about how we see Him.

So stop shrinking Him down to something comfortable. He is not your buddy upstairs keeping an eye on things.

He is the living God.

Treat Him like it.
