The Bible speaks several times about something called the Book of Life. It is not just a symbol of religion or church membership. It is connected with those who belong to God and have eternal life.

Paul mentioned people whose names were written in the Book of Life:

“Indeed, true companion, I ask you also, help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement as well as the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.” (Philippians 4:3)

The Book of Life is God’s record of those who are His.

That does not mean God needs a book because He might forget somebody. God knows perfectly well who belongs to Him. Paul wrote:

“Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, ‘The Lord knows those who are His.’” (2 Timothy 2:19)

When you are truly saved, when you surrender your life to Christ and are born again, you belong to Him. God knows your name. He knows who you are, and He knows that you are His.

When I think about God writing a name in the Book of Life, I picture Him writing it in ink so it cannot be erased. Scripture does not say God literally uses ink. That is simply how I picture it. But Jesus did say something that shows us the security of those who truly belong to Him:

“The one who overcomes will be clothed the same way, in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” (Revelation 3:5)

Your name is not written there casually or temporarily.

The Bible also tells us why the Book of Life matters so much. At the final judgment, the books will be opened.

“And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.” (Revelation 20:12)

A few verses later we read:

“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)

That makes this very serious.

The question is not whether your name appears on a church membership list. It is not whether you were baptized, raised in a Christian home, or have called yourself a Christian for years.

The question is whether you truly belong to Christ.

Jesus said:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

The Book of Life should never become something we turn into religious speculation. Some people say our names are written there in the blood of Christ. Scripture does not say that. Christ’s blood paid the price for our redemption, but the Bible never tells us that His blood is literally used to write names in the Book of Life.

We should be careful not to add something simply because it sounds spiritual.

What Scripture does tell us is enough.

God knows those who are His.

Their names are in the Book of Life.

And in the end, nothing will matter more than whether your name is there.

If you have truly surrendered your life to Christ, been born again, and belong to Him, you can rest in this truth: God knows your name.

But if you do not know Christ, do not comfort yourself simply because you believe in God, attend church, or try to live a decent life. Come to Christ. Turn from your sin. Surrender yourself to Him.

Make sure you are not merely religious.

Make sure you are His.
