The Bible is the written Word of God. God used many different people to write it, but He guided what they wrote. “All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
The Bible contains 66 books. The Old Testament has 39 books and tells us about creation, the history of Israel, God’s law, and His promise to send a Savior. The New Testament has 27 books and tells us about Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, the beginning of the church, and how Christians should live.
Although the Bible contains many books written by different people, it tells one connected story. God created us, sin separated us from Him, and God sent Jesus Christ to save sinners and bring them back to Himself.
You do not have to understand everything immediately. Begin with the Gospel of John and read a little each day. Ask God to help you understand what you are reading.
If possible, use a reliable translation such as the New American Standard Bible, NASB, or the English Standard Version, ESV. Both stay close to the original wording of Scripture. If you already own another trustworthy translation, begin reading it rather than waiting to purchase a different Bible.
