We know that Jesus Christ came into this world, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead, and returned to heaven. We also know that one day He will return. But have you ever stopped to wonder what Jesus is doing right now?
Is He simply sitting in heaven waiting for the day He returns? Has He finished everything He came to do, or is He still actively involved in our lives?
The Bible gives us some wonderful answers. And one of them should bring great comfort to every Christian.
JESUS IS INTERCEDING FOR US
Hebrews 7:25 says, “Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
To intercede means to speak or act on behalf of someone else. Right now, Jesus Christ is interceding for those who belong to Him. Think about that for a moment. The Son of God, who gave His life to save us, continues to represent us before His Father.
Romans 8:34 confirms this. “Christ Jesus is He who died, but rather, was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”
We do not know the exact words Jesus speaks on our behalf, but we know He intercedes for us. His sacrifice on the cross was complete and sufficient. His intercession does not mean something was left unfinished. It means our risen Savior continues to care for those He has saved.
There is something deeply humbling about knowing that Jesus Christ is interceding for us even now.
JESUS IS OUR ADVOCATE
What happens when a Christian sins? Does Jesus turn away from us? Does He stop caring because we have failed Him?
Listen to what John wrote in 1 John 2:1: “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
An advocate is someone who represents another person. Jesus does not excuse our sins or pretend they do not matter. He is our righteous Advocate, and His own sacrifice is the basis for our forgiveness.
That should never encourage us to take sin lightly. Instead, it should make us grateful for a Savior who remains faithful even when we fail.
JESUS IS REIGNING
After Jesus rose from the dead, He ascended into heaven and took His place at the right hand of God.
Hebrews 10:12 says, “but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.”
Jesus sitting at the Father's right hand does not mean He is doing nothing. It speaks of His position of honor and authority. His sacrifice for sins is finished, but His reign continues.
Ephesians 1:20–22 teaches that God raised Christ from the dead, seated Him at His right hand, placed Him above every rule and authority, and put all things under His feet.
The world may appear to be out of control at times, but Jesus Christ has not lost His authority.
JESUS IS BUILDING HIS CHURCH
Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, “I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”
Notice whose church it is. Jesus said, “My church.”
Christ is still building His church today. People are hearing the gospel, coming to faith in Him, and becoming part of His body. He is the head of the church, as Colossians 1:18 tells us.
Buildings, programs, and organizations are not what make the church. The church consists of people who belong to Jesus Christ. And He has not stopped His work among them.
JESUS IS SUSTAINING ALL THINGS
There is another truth about Christ that we sometimes overlook. He is not only our Savior; He is also the One through whom all things were created.
Colossians 1:17 says, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Hebrews 1:3 tells us that He upholds all things by the word of His power.
The universe does not continue simply because God started it long ago and walked away. Christ continues to sustain His creation. Every moment of our existence depends upon His power.
JESUS HAS PROMISED TO RETURN
Jesus told His disciples in John 14:3, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be.”
We should be careful not to add details that Scripture does not give us about what preparing that place involves. But the promise is clear. Jesus has not forgotten those who belong to Him. He will come again, just as He said.
Until then, He continues His work.
When we think about Jesus, we often picture Him as a baby in a manger, teaching the crowds, dying on a cross, or rising from the tomb. Those are wonderful truths, but they are not the end of His story.
Jesus Christ is alive today. He is reigning, sustaining His creation, building His church, and representing His people before the Father.
And perhaps the most personal truth of all is this: If you belong to Jesus Christ, you have a Savior who is interceding for you right now.
You may feel forgotten by the world. You may be struggling with circumstances nobody else understands. You may even find yourself wondering whether anyone truly cares.
But the One who loved you enough to die for you has not forgotten you.
His sacrifice is finished, but His ministry on your behalf has not ended.
