“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
Many believers have been taught to look for God in a feeling, a dream, a thought that suddenly enters their mind, or a strong inner impression. God did speak in dreams and visions at times in the Bible. There is no question about that.
But how does God speak to us today? How can we know we are truly hearing from Him and not simply following our own thoughts?
God has not left us guessing. He has given us His Word.
1. God Speaks With Certainty Through Scripture
The Bible is not merely a book about God. It is God’s Word.
“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son” (Hebrews 1:1–2).
Jesus is God’s final and perfect revelation of Himself. Everything we need to know about Christ, salvation, truth, sin, obedience, and eternal life has been given to us in the Scriptures.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
Notice what that says. Scripture equips God’s people for every good work. We do not need a new message from God to tell us how to live a faithful life. We need to know, believe, and obey the message He has already given.
When you want to hear from God, open your Bible.
2. The Holy Spirit Helps Us Understand and Obey God’s Word
The Holy Spirit lives in every true believer. He does not replace the Bible. He helps us understand it, believe it, and apply it to our lives.
“Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything” (2 Timothy 2:7).
We should pray before we read. Ask God to show us where we are wrong, what He wants us to obey, and what truth we need to understand.
The Holy Spirit may bring Scripture to your mind when you are tempted, afraid, discouraged, or trying to make a decision. But He will never give you a message that contradicts the Word He inspired.
3. Not Every Thought or Feeling Is God Speaking
A strong feeling does not make something true. A dream does not automatically come from God. An open door is not always God’s direction. A closed door is not always God telling you no.
“The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
“There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).
Our feelings can be real, but they are not always reliable. We may feel afraid when God has told us not to fear. We may feel justified in being angry when God tells us to forgive. We may feel drawn to something that God calls sin.
If a thought tells you to do what Scripture forbids, it is not from God. If someone says, “God told me,” but what they claim does not agree with the Bible, do not believe them.
4. Test Everything by the Bible
God tells us plainly not to believe every claimed message.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).
The Bereans gave us a good example:
“Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
They did not accept Paul’s teaching simply because Paul was a well-known preacher. They searched the Scriptures. We should do the same with every preacher, every teacher, every book, every video, every dream, and every inner impression.
The question is not, “Did this sound spiritual?” The question is, “Does this agree with God’s Word?”
5. Ask God for Wisdom When the Bible Does Not Give a Direct Command
The Bible will not tell you what job to take, what house to buy, or exactly where to live. But it gives you principles for making wise and godly choices.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).
Pray. Search the Scriptures. Seek wise counsel from mature believers who know the Bible. Look honestly at your motives. Then make the best decision you can in obedience to Christ.
Do not sit still waiting for a voice, a sign, or a feeling. If the choice is not sinful and you have sought God’s wisdom, move forward in faith.
6. Be Careful When Saying, “God Told Me”
Sometimes people use those words when they really mean, “I feel strongly about this,” or “I believe this may be the right direction.” There is a difference.
When a person says, “God told me,” they are claiming God has spoken. That is serious. It can also pressure others to accept an idea without testing it.
It is better to say, “I have prayed about this, searched the Scriptures, and I believe this is the wise thing to do.” That is honest. It leaves room for correction. It keeps God’s Word in its rightful place.
God still leads His people. He leads us through His Word, by His Spirit, through prayer, wise counsel, and obedient living. But His written Word is the standard by which everything else must be tested.
Do not chase every voice. Do not trust every feeling. Learn God’s Word. Read it. Study it. Obey it.
That is how you learn to hear God.
