If you have repented of your sins and placed your faith in Jesus Christ, your new life has begun. You will not understand everything at once, and you will not become perfect overnight. God will teach you and change you as you walk with Him.
1. Begin reading the Bible
Start with the Gospel of John in the New Testament. John clearly explains who Jesus is, why He came, and what it means to believe in Him. Read a little each day. Before you begin, ask God to help you understand His Word.
Do not be discouraged when you do not understand everything. Keep reading, pray for understanding, and obey what you already understand. God will teach you one step at a time.
2. Pray honestly
Prayer is talking honestly with God. Thank Him for saving you. Tell Him about your fears, needs, struggles, and sins. Ask Him to help you understand the Bible and live in a way that pleases Him. You do not need special words. God wants honesty, not a performance.
3. Obey what you understand
The Christian life is not only learning what the Bible says. It is putting God’s truth into practice. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). When Scripture shows you something you should believe, stop doing, or begin doing, obey Christ.
4. Expect your life to change
Salvation does not mean that every habit and struggle disappears immediately. It means God has begun changing you. Some changes may come quickly, while others take time. Do not make peace with sin, but do not give up when growth is slow.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
5. Do not hide when you sin
You will still face temptation, and you may still sin. When you do, do not hide from God or give up. Confess it, turn away from it, and continue following Christ.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
6. Be careful who teaches you
Not every preacher, church, book, video, or website that uses the name of Jesus teaches the truth. Compare everything you hear with Scripture. The believers in Berea were praised because they were “examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
7. Find faithful believers
Find a church that teaches the Bible as the Word of God and clearly preaches Jesus Christ. You need believers who will teach you, pray with you, encourage you, and help you grow. No church is perfect, but a faithful church will point you toward Christ and the truth of Scripture.
8. Be careful about old influences
Some people and places may pull you back toward the life Christ is leading you away from. You do not have to stop caring about people, but you may need distance from influences that encourage sin or weaken your walk with God. Ask the Lord for wisdom and choose close friends who will encourage you to follow Christ.
9. Do not build your faith on feelings
Some days you may feel close to God. Other days you may not feel close to Him at all. Feelings change, but God’s Word does not. Do not measure God’s love, your salvation, or the truth of His promises by how you feel that day. Trust what God has said and keep walking with Him.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
10. Do not give Satan more attention than Christ
Satan is real, but he is not equal to God. Do not become so focused on him that you blame every problem on Satan or begin living in fear. Keep your attention on Jesus Christ, know God’s Word, pray, obey God, and stand firm in the truth.
“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
11. You do not need to know every answer before telling someone about Jesus
Simply explain what Christ has done for you and show them what Scripture says. You cannot save anyone or force someone to believe. Your responsibility is to speak the truth with kindness and point them to Jesus Christ. God is the One who works in the heart.
12. Let the truth about eternity shape how you live
Death is not the end, and this life is not all there is. If you belong to Christ, you can face death with hope because you will be with Him and your body will one day be raised. Let that hope help you live faithfully for Christ today.
13. Live ready for Jesus to return
Jesus Christ is coming again, but no one knows the day or hour. Do not follow people who set dates or become frightened by every troubling event in the news. Being ready means faithfully following Christ today. Keep trusting Him, obeying His Word, and living in a way that pleases Him.
“Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).
14. Do not try to earn God’s grace
Salvation is not a reward for being good, attending church, or doing religious things. It is God’s gift to those who repent and place their faith in Jesus Christ. Obey Christ because you love Him and belong to Him, not because you are trying to make God owe you salvation.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).
15. Do not be afraid to ask questions
Every believer has questions, especially when first learning the Bible. Never feel embarrassed because you do not understand something. Ask whatever is on your mind. That is one reason Dean is here. He may not be able to answer every question personally, but as time permits, he will do his best to help or address the subject in a future Bible lesson or article.
16. Guard what you allow to shape your heart
What you repeatedly watch, read, listen to, and think about will affect your desires, attitudes, words, and actions. Guarding your heart does not mean hiding from the world. It means paying attention to what is drawing you closer to Christ and what is slowly pulling you away from Him.
“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23).
17. Learn to serve before seeking a position
Do not be in a hurry to gain a title or become a leader. Begin by serving faithfully wherever help is needed, even when nobody notices. Godly leadership grows from humility, dependable service, and a life that follows Christ.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
18. Make sure God actually made the promise
Every promise in the Bible is true, but not every promise was made directly to every Christian. Some were given to certain people in certain situations. Read the verses around a promise and ask who God was speaking to and what He actually promised. Trust God completely, but do not build your faith on a promise someone has taken out of context.
“For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes.” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
19. Learn to recognize temptation
Temptation is not the same as sin. Jesus was tempted, yet He did not sin. Learn what commonly weakens you and avoid places where you willingly put yourself in danger. When temptation comes, pray, remember God’s Word, and take the way of escape God provides.
“With the temptation [God] will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
20. Forgive others
Forgiveness does not mean that sin was acceptable or that trust must be restored immediately. It means giving up personal revenge and placing justice in God’s hands. Remember how much Christ has forgiven you, and ask Him to help you forgive those who have hurt you.
“Just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also.” (Colossians 3:13).
21. Read Scripture in context
Do not build a belief on one sentence separated from the passage around it. Read what comes before and after a verse. Ask who was speaking, to whom they spoke, and what subject was being discussed. Let Scripture explain Scripture.
“Accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15).
22. Do not chase signs and miracles
God can perform miracles, but a claimed sign does not prove that a teacher speaks for God. False teachers can use signs to draw attention to themselves. Test the message by Scripture and look at whether it leads people to obey Jesus Christ.
“Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1).
23. Use your money faithfully
Money is useful, but it must never become your master. Work honestly, avoid greed, care for your family, help those in need, and give willingly. Never send money to a preacher because he promises that God will make you rich or heal you in return.
“You cannot serve God and wealth.” (Matthew 6:24).
24. Guard your words
Your words can heal or cause deep wounds. Refuse gossip, cruel jokes, lies, and angry speech. Speak truthfully and kindly. When you say something wrong, admit it and ask forgiveness. A changed heart should begin changing the way you speak.
“Let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for edification... say that.” (Ephesians 4:29).
25. Do not expect an easy life
Following Christ does not remove every sickness, loss, disappointment, or hardship. Jesus promised His followers trouble in this world, but He also promised His presence and peace. Trials can strengthen your faith when you continue trusting God.
“In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).
26. Accept biblical correction
Correction may be uncomfortable, but a wise believer listens when Scripture exposes an error. Do not defend a belief merely because your family, church, or favorite preacher taught it. Let God’s Word correct you, and be thankful when someone speaks the truth in love.
“One who loves discipline loves knowledge, but one who hates rebuke is stupid.” (Proverbs 12:1).
27. Do not neglect your family
Serving in church does not excuse neglecting your family. Let those closest to you see patience, honesty, kindness, and faithfulness. If strangers receive your best behavior while your family receives your worst, something must change.
“If anyone does not provide for his own... he has denied the faith.” (1 Timothy 5:8).
28. Learn to be content
The world will always tell you that you need more. Contentment does not mean refusing to improve your situation. It means trusting God and refusing to measure your life by possessions. Thank God for what He has provided and do not envy what others have.
“Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have.” (Hebrews 13:5).
29. Keep learning about Christ
Never believe that you have learned enough. Continue reading the Bible, praying, listening to faithful teaching, and asking questions. Knowledge should make you more humble, obedient, loving, and useful to others, not proud.
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18).
30. Keep walking when you feel discouraged
There may be days when you feel weak, confused, or tired. Do not mistake discouragement for failure. Return to God’s Word, pray honestly, seek help from faithful believers, and take the next right step. Christ has not abandoned you.
“Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.” (Galatians 6:9).
31. Remember that you belong to Christ
Your old life no longer owns you. You belong to Jesus Christ. Let that truth guide what you watch, say, desire, and do. You will not live perfectly, but you should no longer be comfortable living as though Christ has no authority over you.
“You are not your own... For you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
32. Remember that you are more than your body
God created you with an inner life that Scripture describes as the soul and spirit. The Bible does not answer every question about the difference between them, but it makes clear that you belong to God and will one day stand before Him. What matters most is whether you belong to Jesus Christ.
“For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).

33. Learn to fear the Lord
Fearing the Lord does not mean living in terror that God is waiting to destroy you. It means knowing that He is holy, righteous, and worthy of reverence, respect, and obedience. Do not treat God or sin casually. Ask whether your choices please Him.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10).
34. Stay away from occult practices
Do not use horoscopes, psychics, tarot cards, mediums, spirit boards, or anything that claims to give hidden knowledge or spiritual power apart from God. These things are not harmless entertainment. Trust God’s Word, pray for wisdom, and bring your questions about the future to Him.
“There shall not be found among you anyone who…uses divination.” (Deuteronomy 18:10).

35. Test traditions by Scripture
A church tradition may be useful, but it must never be given the authority that belongs to God’s Word. Do not accept a teaching merely because it is old, popular, or familiar. Open the Bible and make sure the teaching agrees with what God has said.
“And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.” (Matthew 15:6).
36. Follow Christ when others do not understand
Some family members or friends may not understand why your life is changing. They may laugh at your faith, question your decisions, or try to pull you back into your old way of living. Do not become proud, harsh, or argumentative. Treat them with love and respect, but do not disobey Christ to gain their approval.
Let them see the difference Christ is making in you. Be honest, patient, dependable, and willing to explain your hope when they ask. You cannot force anyone to believe, but you can speak the truth and live faithfully before them.
“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15).
Keep walking with Christ
Do not try to learn everything in one day. Read the Bible, pray, obey what you learn, and stay close to faithful believers. God has begun a new work in you, and He will continue teaching you one step at a time.
